There are 3 articles: "a", "an" and "the". Indefinite articles such as "a" and "an" refer to something that is not specific whereas "the", a definite article refers to something specific. "a" refers to any car that you may see on a road, for example, "I like a car because it is convenient." "a" refers to any car. However, if I say, "That is the car I want to buy.", I'm referring to a specific car and not just any car. We use "an" mainly before nouns that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u), for example, "I ate an orange for lunch" and I use an umbrella when it rains. There are exceptions to the rule. You do not say "a hour" instead the correct article to use is "an" in "an hour" and you do not say "an university" instead you say "a university".
